ABB is leaving the solar inverter business

ABB and Italian company FIMER SpA announced today that they have signed an agreement for FIMER to take over ABB's solar inverter business. The transaction will improve the future prospects of the solar inverter business and allow ABB to focus its business portfolio on other growth markets.

ABB's solar inverter business employs around 800 people in more than 30 countries. Production and research and development sites are located in Italy, India and Finland. It includes Power-One's solar inverter business, which was acquired by ABB's Discrete Automation and Motion division in 2013. The company offers a comprehensive portfolio of products, systems and services for various types of solar systems. The company currently operates in ABB's electrification business and had sales of approximately $ 290 million in 2018.

Both companies ensure a smooth transition for customers and employees. FIMER will honor all existing warranties and ABB will reimburse FIMER for taking over the business and its liabilities.

As a result, ABB anticipates an after-tax non-operating charge of approximately $ 430 million in the second quarter of 2019, with a corresponding impact on 2019 half-year results. Around 75 percent of this burden is accounted for by cash outflows that ABB will pay to FIMER from the time the deal closes by 2025. In addition, ABB expects separation costs of up to $ 40 million from the second half of 2019.
