Fusion Fuel Green PLC, a green hydrogen technology company, is proud to announce that it has signed an MoU with BGR Energy Systems Limited, one of India's leading EPC companies, to develop green hydrogen projects in India. The companies intend to set up a first demonstration plant in India in 2021 and then develop larger projects in the region to supply hydrogen for the production of green ammonia and bioethanol, and as a feedstock for other heavy industrial applications.

Fusion Fuel will install a small demonstration plant for BGR Energy in the Cuddalore region, Tamil Nadu, India, in the second half of 2021, using its market-leading HEVO-SOLAR technology to produce cheaper green hydrogen. The companies will then jointly develop projects across India, making use of BGR Energy's extensive customer network and existing economic presence. In view of the extensive competencies of BGR Energy in the fields of energy, environment and industry, the companies will also examine broader areas of potential cooperation.

Since its inception, BGR Energy has developed more than 12,000 MW of power plants and services related to Balance of Plant in India and has extensive capabilities in the design and manufacture of high-tech equipment, which places BGR well-positioned to adopt leading the development of the infrastructure for the production of green hydrogen in the region.

Hydrogen already plays a crucial role in the Indian economy. Around 6 million tons of hydrogen are consumed annually, mainly in the production of ammonia and methanol and for use in refineries. A recent study by the Energy and Resources Institute estimated that demand could rise as high as 28 million tons by 2050. Almost all of the hydrogen consumed in India today is gray hydrogen, the production of which emits around 9 tons of CO2 per ton of hydrogen. Enabling low-cost domestic production of green hydrogen will be critical to reducing the carbon intensity of heavy industry and helping India meet its energy security and emissions goals.

João Wahnon, Head of Business Development at Fusion Fuel, said: “We are excited to open this new market for Fusion Fuel and develop India as a leader in the global hydrogen economy. We couldn't ask for a better partner for this company than BGR Energy with its extensive experience in developing turnkey solutions in the Indian energy and industrial sector. “

Arjun Govind Raghupathy, Managing Director of BGR Energy commented, “BGR Energy has long been an innovator in India's energy and industrial sectors and we are now excited to take these steps to break into the burgeoning green hydrogen industry. We look forward to working with Fusion Fuel to scale the development of local green hydrogen production and to play a leading role in creating a green hydrogen ecosystem in the region. “
