Exide Industries and Leclanché SA's 0.52 megawatt hour on-grid system will pave the way for wider adoption of grid-scale energy storage technology across India.
DELHI, INDIA, YVERDON-LES-BAINS, Switzerland March 27, 2021 – Nexcharge was inaugurated today in partnership with Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL) India's first grid-tied Li-ion battery-based Community Energy Storage System in Rani Bagh, Delhi. The 0.52 MWh battery energy storage system in the Rani Bagh substation by TPDDL offers a mechanism for tip shaving, var compensation and deviation accounting based on the frequency response at substation level with emergency power supply for preferred consumers in the event of a power failure.
Speaking of initiative, Stefan Louis, CEO and Head of Technology at Nexcharge said: ‘Battery-based energy storage (BESS) offers the flexibility to better integrate intermittent solar and wind energy resources into the Indian power grid and ensure high quality power supply for consumers. Such a community energy storage system will ensure that consumers experience better levels of stability, reliability, quality and control. Both customers and dealers will benefit from this service. We are very excited to partner with Tata Power DDL to implement this new 0.52 MWh on-grid system that will pave a new path for wider adoption of grid-scale energy storage technology across India. This is another step for all Indians who have access to smart energy sources. ‘
The camp was inaugurated by Shri Satyendar Kumar Jain Hon. Minister for Power, PWD, Health & FW, Industry and Gurudwara Elections, Govt. from NCT of Delhi in the presence of Stefan Louis, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer -Nexcharge, Ganesh Srinivasan- Chief Executive Officer – Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited.
Comment on the start, Mr. Ganesh Srinivasan, CEO of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited said, ‘We are proud to partner with Nexcharge to deploy the country's first Grid Connected Community Energy Storage (CESS) systems at the community level. This will further strengthen our network and guarantee our consumers a reliable, high-quality power supply at all times. Instead of building a huge infrastructure of transformers and electrical devices, CESS can be used to meet peak demand while storing excess electricity. I believe that a broader introduction of such a “CESS” will help to balance the load curve of discoms and make them sustainable. ”
Speaking of multi-MNC joint venture to found Nexcharge, Gautam Chatterjee, CEO of Exide Industries Limited said: ‘We have spent a long time developing alternative, state-of-the-art technologies such as lithium-ion batteries and energy storage solutions to combat the effects of climate change on the environment. Leclanché SA has proven to be a suitable partner in this regard, offering superior technologies, modules and battery management systems as well as immediate access to technical resources in order to develop marketable products and solutions. ‘
Anil Srivastava, chairman of the board of Leclanché SA added: ‘It is a great honor that Leclanché has been selected by Exide Industries, India's largest battery maker, to work with them to help India meet its zero emission goals and reduce the country's reliance on fossil fuels. We look forward to delivering the best that Leclanché SA has to offer: superior cell technologies, intellectual property and know-how that combines high quality German engineering and Swiss precision with extensive experience in developing and implementing battery storage solutions. ‘
Battery storage systems are a potential solution for integrating renewable solar and wind turbines into power systems around the world. Given the ongoing climate crisis, renewable and sustainable energy sources are the order of the day, especially when India's commitment to contributing 175 GW by 2022 has been touted.
Nexcharge, an Exide Leclanche Energy Pvt. The Ltd. was founded in 2018 as a joint venture (JV) between India's largest manufacturer of lead-acid storage batteries, Exide Industries Limited, and one of the leading manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries (Li-on) based in Switzerland, Leclanché, SA ( Leclanché). Nexcharge intends to accelerate the global shift towards sustainable energy solutions and aims to become the leading provider of e-transport solutions that drive the electrification of transport in the form of efficient and reliable energy storage solutions. Nexcharge also aims to serve the various segments of the industrial and utility markets with cutting edge products and end-to-end solutions available through Li-ion batteries of various chemistries. NMC, LFP, LTO etc. To accomplish its mission, Nexcharge has built India's largest factory in Prantij, which is equipped with fully automated assembly lines made of Li-ion batteries, modules (Pouch / Prismatic / Cylindrical) and cell test laboratories. Sabarkantha, Gujarat. Nexcharge is also supported by a state-of-the-art in-house R&D facility in Bangalore.
