Every year we are plagued with news of rotating brownouts due to the depletion of electricity in our grid.
Earlier this month, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued yellow and red warnings for three days, warning electricity consumers in some areas of rotating power outages. Yellow warnings are triggered when the energy reserves are low and a red warning when there is insufficient energy reserve, which can lead to interruptions in the rotational energy. To further exacerbate the damage, there is also the possibility that electricity prices will rise due to insufficient power supply and the rise in electricity prices in WESM. The DOE indicated that the supply problems were caused by the sudden shutdowns and extended scheduled maintenance of some of the major power plants.
The hot temperatures of recent times are one of the major factors behind the increased energy demand. Time never goes backwards and with the growing population and new challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic brings, there is a clear realization. If we don't find solutions to the problems, the Philippines will continue to experience annual blackouts which can lead to a worse blackout and higher electricity costs. Is there still a hope for every Juan?
Sustainable energy for every Juan
The recurring blackouts we experience due to the country's reliance on fossil fuels and non-renewable energies affect a wide variety of households and businesses across the country in a variety of ways. It keeps coming back to the country's need for more stable, reliable and sustainable energy sources. The Renewable Energy Act of 2008 or RA 9513 aims to accelerate the development of renewable energy sources such as solar energy in order to achieve self-sufficiency and reduce the country's reliance on fossil fuels. In addition, the efficient and cost-effective commercial use of renewable energies is to be promoted.
The higher cost of energy and the risk of unexpected power outages are one of the reasons why Solaric is seeing a huge increase in home and business owners seeking solar power solutions. While it also cuts monthly electricity bills, many of these solaristas are trying to reduce their carbon footprint and help the environment over the long term while staying energy and financially secure for the next 25 years or more.
While it can take years to build more coal-fired power plants to boost the country's energy supply, it can only take 2 to 3 days to turn your home into a self-generating power plant by installing a solar array. In addition, excess solar power that is not used during the day is automatically fed into the grid to supplement the thinning offer, and the power can also be exchanged for night / weekend credit via the net metering program. The Philippines is in a renewable gold mine as we get a higher amount of solar energy each year. The use of solar energy can bring many great benefits not only for us, but also for future generations.
