A federal government program of $ 10.2 million is offering hotels up to $ 25,000 in grants to improve their facilities and reduce their electricity bills. However, the grants cannot be used for new or replacement solar modules, batteries for solar systems, or vehicle replacement. Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor will announce the program on Thursday in Sydney. Hotels, motels and serviced apartments with up to 99 rooms can apply for subsidies from February 24th to the beginning of April, provided the funds have not been used up. Energy saving projects on the list include replacing air conditioning with more efficient units, replacing refrigerators, and maintaining double-glazed windows. The hotel sector is struggling with various coronavirus restrictions across the country, closures of domestic borders and no international tourists. Mr. Taylor says the grants will help businesses in the long run. “Energy bills are one of the top overheads for customs officers and hotel owners. These grants will lower those operating costs and help them get back into business during this critical time,” he said. Michael Johnson, chief executive of Tourism Accommodation Australia, says the grants will help hotels recover from the toughest 12 months the industry has seen. “Energy costs have become one of the largest ongoing expenses for many hotels, regardless of how well or poorly a hotel is performing,” he said. “These grants will help hotels buy capital goods and complete jobs that not only lower their energy bills but also reduce their carbon footprint.” Australian Associated Press
